Fed: Howard rejects proposal for bill of rights

Mr FRASER, a co-president of the Stolen Generation's Journey of Healing, repeated his
call for a national apology for the destruction of families in his Darwin address.

He says a prime minister who acted to resolve differences between white and black Australia
would strengthen his moral authority.

But Mr HOWARD has defended his refusal to apologise, saying the issue isn't that simple.

Mr HOWARD says the best way to improve the situation is to address present disadvantage
through practical reconciliation.

He says it's a slow process but says some progress is being made in areas like health.

Fed: ACT Health Minister meeting with UN drug experts

ACT Health Minister MICHAEL MOORE is meeting with UN drug experts this morning to discuss
the territory's plan for injecting rooms.

The International Narcotics Control Board requested the meeting to discuss Mr MOORE's
proposal for a safe injecting room in Canberra's city centre.

The plan involves allowing addicts to inject drugs under medical supervision.

Earlier this year, the narcotics board said governments risk breaking international
laws by approving such injecting rooms.

SA: Marketing consultant shot dead at nudist beach

ADELAIDE, Jan 13 AAP - A 42-year-old marketing consultant was found shot dead in a
carpark at Adelaide's only official nudist beach early today.

Police said the man had several gunshot wounds.

They said a male suspect in the killing was seen driving the dead man's car, a silver-blue
Falcon, from the scene before crashing it into nearby trees and then fleeing on foot.

A woman who called police with information about the killing gave them some specific
details and detectives wanted to speak with her again.

FED: Nobel Prize winner backs genetically modified labelling

Australian Nobel Prize winner PETER DOHERTY has backed special labelling for genetically
modified food, saying it could be treated in the same way as food dyes.

Professor DOHERTY has told ABC Radio that genetic modification is necessary to feed the
world's population, which is growing by 83 million people per year.

Prof DOHERTY says it's important that people are informed on genetically modified food and
don't perceive any threat or conspiracy.

But, he says labelling should be very specific and like the food dye labelling system

where a numbers are given on labels and can be looked up for details.

Federal Health Minister MICHAEL WOOLDRIDGE will take over responsibility for approving all
releases of genetically modified food and drugs in Australia from today.





Prof DOHERTY won the science Nobel Prize for physiology and medicine in 1996.

MELBOURNE, April 1 AAP - A 48-year-old man has been charged with the murder of an
unemployed father of eight found shot dead yesterday in eastern Victoria.

Michael Willis, of the small town of Athlone in Gippsland, appeared in Korumburra
Magistrates Court charged with the murder of Colin Lamb, 50, of Nyora, also in Gippsland.

Willis was remanded in custody to appear in Melbourne Magistrates' Court on April 15, a
Victoria Police spokeswoman said.

VIC: Old fashioned method finishes off VCE result delivery

MELBOURNE, Dec 14 AAP - More than 70,000 Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) students
now know their final results, including those who chose or were forced to use the
old-fashioned but reliable method of finding them out - the mail.

Since 6am on Friday, 31,834 students had called the results hotline to hear the news, 506
students had called the international results service and 3,643 had registered on the Internet
to find out, the states Board of Studies said.

The rest of the 70,220 students eligible to receive results this year should have found
them in the letterbox today.

"The Board of Studies congratulates all students who have successfully completed their VCE
in 1998 and is proud to be bringing this good news to them before students in other states,"
board chief executive officer Professor Sam Ball said in a statement.

Despite the provision in recent years of electronic methods of finding out results, a
significant number of students still favoured the more traditional method, Professor Ball
said.

"For many students nothing beats a worry-free weekend at the beach (before facing the
results) and a personalised delivery from the postie," he said.

He said 93.4 per cent of students eligible to receive their VCE in 1998 had been
successful, with a 94.8 per cent completion rate for females and a 91.7 per cent completion
rate for males.
